The Jason M. Garfield Scholarship Fund, Inc. is a non-profit organization that continues to make a difference in the local seaside community of Marblehead, Massachusetts.
Currently, the Fund awards 'need based' academic scholarships to Marblehead High School seniors who have been accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning. The Fund also makes grants to non-profits in the efforts perpetuating Jason's name and spirit.
The Fund was established in August 1983 after the death of thirteen-year-old Jason "Jaybird" Garfield of Marblehead. Jason participated in hockey and baseball and enjoyed sailing in town. He played on the Pee Wee A Hockey team and was a member of the Pleon Yacht Club. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. While waging his courageous battle, he showed remarkable fight, bravery, and the ability to overcome the toughest of obstacles, even when faced with an uncertain future. He had a way of cheering up, but also of inspiring, everybody around him. Over a very short period of time, Jason forever touched the lives of many people.
After Jason lost his courageous two-year battle with Leukemia, a small group of family friends joined together to form the Jason M. Garfield Scholarship Fund. These local families include: Ellis and Bernice Woodfin, Bert and Jackie Miller, George and Audrey Connolly, Bob and Joan Livingston, Ken and Sheila Roy, Dick and Gloria Ledbury, Frank and Pat Hart, Mike and Beth Snow and Al Sweetland.
Today, the Fund is thriving more then ever with yearly fund-raisers, scholarships and grants. Please browse the website for additional information.
